Milk teeth do more than help children chew – they hold space for the permanent teeth developing underneath. If a milk tooth is lost too early because of decay or injury, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap, leaving too little room for the permanent tooth to erupt. This often leads to crowding and the need for lengthier orthodontic treatment later.

A space maintainer is a small, custom-made appliance that holds the gap open until the permanent tooth is ready to come through. If some space has already been lost, a space regainer can gently push the drifted teeth back to recover it. Both appliances are simple, well tolerated by children and monitored at regular review visits.
