Nitrous oxide – often called “laughing gas” – is a mild sedative breathed through a small, comfortable nose mask along with oxygen. Within minutes it helps an anxious child feel calm, relaxed and at ease, while remaining fully awake, responsive and able to talk with the dentist throughout the procedure.
One of its biggest advantages is how quickly it wears off: once the treatment is finished, the child breathes pure oxygen for a few minutes and the effects fade rapidly, allowing a normal return to daily activities. It is a widely used, well-established option in pediatric dentistry for making treatment gentler for nervous children.
Anxious or fearful children, children with a strong gag reflex, those needing longer procedures, and children who want to cooperate but struggle to sit comfortably through treatment.
